The House
Our Traditions
**What Is Orenda**
Half of our name is a word most people have never met. It is the more important half.
IThe word
Orenda comes from the Haudenosaunee, the Iroquois peoples of North America. It names a power.
Not a power granted to a chosen few. A power present, in differing measure, in everything that exists. In a river. A stone. A storm. A song. A human soul.
In a person, orenda becomes something more. A living energy that can be gathered, nurtured, and set in motion by the will of the one who carries it.
IIWhy it matters to you
Sit with what that means for a moment.
If a force lives inside you that answers to your own will, then no circumstance is final, and no destiny is a finished sentence.
That single idea is the ground this whole House is built on. It is why our tagline is not a boast but a translation.
IIIThe two depths that make it sacred to us
In the languages that carry it, orenda is kin to the word for song. The old peoples understood that the voice, the chant, the prayer is how inner force is set moving. Half a world away, the Himalayan traditions arrived at the same truth and called it mantra.
And in its own understanding, orenda is never gathered for superiority or for show. It is nurtured so that it may serve others. To strengthen your own is to strengthen everyone's.
Power, exercised through ritual, in the service of others. We could not have written a better description of our own work.
IVCosmos above, Orenda within
The other half of our name is Cosmos, the old Greek word for the universe understood as order and beauty. The infinite intelligence that arranges the stars and the seasons, the tides and the timings.
Cosmos above. Orenda within. The order of the universe, met by the sovereign force of the soul. Where the two join, transformation becomes possible.
That meeting place is COSMORENDA.
The name was not invented. It was found, and it is carried with reverence, and with a debt of gratitude to the peoples who first named the power it honours.
VOne Light, Many Lamps
Beneath everything this House makes lies a single conviction.
There is one light. And every tradition is a lamp lit from the same fire.
VIThe first principle
We take our first principle from the teaching of the One, Ik Onkar. The understanding that behind every name for the Divine there is one reality, indivisible and universal.
This is why we can draw, with reverence, from many wisdoms at once. Vedic and Himalayan. Contemplative and esoteric. Without contradiction, and without confusion.
We do not mistake the lamp for the flame.
VIIWhat this makes us, and what it does not
We are not a religion. We stand against none.
We hold energy, consciousness itself, as the truth that runs beneath every faith, and we honour each tradition as a sincere attempt to name what cannot fully be named.
We are a school of thought, devoted above all to schooling our own thought.
We do not ask which lamp a person carries. We help them tend the light.
VIIIThe constant beneath the changing
In the deepest work, the remembrance of past lives, the reading of the soul's longer record, one truth returns again and again.
Across a soul's long journey, no single religion stays constant. The soul does.
What endures is not the label. It is the light.
And so we reverence the constant beneath the changing, and we build everything on it.
